Chemical tongues: biomimetic recognition using arrays of synthetic polymers

چکیده
Humans can taste and identify numerous comestibles by combining a small variety of receptor cells that exhibit broad-spectrum sensitivity with information processing based on pattern recognition. Recently, we have developed biosensing strategy called the “chemical tongue”, which mimics system employing polymeric materials containing various chemical structures labeled environment-responsive fluorophores in conjunction statistical techniques such as multivariate analysis machine learning. In this review, author outlines design polymer-based tongues using polyamino acids, DNAs, polyion complexes their applications complex biological samples, including cell suspensions, secretions, therapeutic antibodies. The chemical-tongue is capable recognizing samples unique manner does not, contrast to conventional approaches, rely specific interactions, thereby potentially opening avenues for unexplored uses polymers wide range research areas. This focus review describes human fluorogenic techniques. samples.

Simulation of biomimetic recognition between polymers and surfaces.
Many biological processes, such as transmembrane signaling and pathogen-host interactions, are initiated by a protein recognizing a specific pattern of binding sites on part of a membrane or cell surface. By recognition, we imply that the polymer quickly finds and then adsorbs strongly on the pattern-matched region and not on others. The development of synthetic systems that can mimic such reco...

A glass slide covered with bacteria is pressed into another glass slide coated with partially cured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The PDMS is hardened and the cells are removed to create a textured surface whose indentations preferentially capture the same type of bacteria when a mixture of bacteria is flowed over it. Overcoating the cell-imprinted PDMS with methylsilane groups causes the result...
متن کاملA synthetic lectin analog for biomimetic disaccharide recognition.
Carbohydrate recognition is biologically important but intrinsically challenging, for both nature and host-guest chemists. Saccharides are complex, subtly variable, and camouflaged by hydroxyl groups that hinder discrimination between substrate and water. We have developed a rational strategy for the biomimetic recognition of carbohydrates with all-equatorial stereochemistry (beta-glucose, anal...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Biomimetic Excitable Cell Using Electro-active Polymers
Electro-active polymers are being used to develop a biomimetic excitable gel-cell, through which ion species flow to produce excitability and refractoriness, as found in the biological cardiac myocyte (CM). The artificial gel-cell is composed of a thin ionic gating membrane made of polypyrrole (PPy) sandwiched between two areas of ionic liquid polymer gel (ILPG). ILPG is a soft gelatinous mater...
متن کاملNanostructured materials with biomimetic recognition abilities for chemical sensing
Binding features found in biological systems can be implemented into man-made materials to design nanostructured artificial receptor matrices which are suitable, e.g., for chemical sensing applications. A range of different non-covalent interactions can be utilized based on the chemical properties of the respective analyte. One example is the formation of coordinative bonds between a polymeriza...
